There's no question that Judd Apatow's comedy "Knocked Up" was a hit, grossing $149 million domestic and $70 million overseas from a $30 million budget. However, his recent 'spin-off' film "This is 40" has not been as well received either critically or commercially.
Costing a still economical $35 million, 'This' has pulled in only $67 million so far domestically and just under $5 million overseas. The film has yet to open in several international markets, but Apatow's films rarely get any traction outside the United States.
Despite the decline, Apatow is still keen on moving forward with a third installment. This one would focus on the daughters of Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd's characters in 'This' who also happen to be Apatow's real-life daughters. He tells Getty Images Entertainment:
"I think it's fun to see people grow up… When we first met Maude's character, Sadie, she was 8-years-old, she didn't understand where babies come from and now we see her five years later and she's just cursing and screaming and having teenager problems. So I'm thinking that maybe in the next one she's in college … Maybe this is a great way to make home movies"
