Sundance 2013 Acquisitions: Volume One

After a slow start, deal buying is finally getting underway in Park City for the various films that are on offer. Amongst those over the finish line or nearly there are:

Austenland
Exclusive Releasing and FilmDistrict are closing on a deal to acquire rights to Jerusha Hess' "Austenland," which the companies would team to split 50/50 worldwide. "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer produced the film and is expected to sign the deal for it later today.

The Look of Love
IFC Films has picked up "The Look Of Love," Steve Coogan and Michael Winterbottom's period biopic of U.K. smut king Paul Raymond. A release later in 2013 is planned.

Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer
HBO Documentary Films has acquired U.S. television rights to Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin's documentary "Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer" which premiered Friday night at Sundance. The film tells the true story of the three young women who comprise the feminist art collective Pussy Riot.

The Rambler & Morning
Anchor Bay Films has snapped up the North America rights for both the genre tale "The Rambler" and Leland Orser’s directorial debut "Morning".

The Spectacular Now
A24 has scored the North American rights to James Ponsoldt's teen dramedy "The Spectacular Now" starring Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley. A summer release is planned.

The Summit
Sundance Selects has picked up two documentaries - the mountain climbing-themed "The Summit" and the war-on-terror film "Dirty Wars."

Twenty Feet From Stardom
RADiUS-TWC has acquired North American rights to Morgan Neville's world premiere documentary "Twenty Feet From Stardom". The film follows the story of the unheralded back up singers to the world's greatest industry legends.

Other hot titles still in contention are "Ain't Them Bodies Saints," "Before Midnight," "Don Jon's Addiciton," "In Fear," "Toy's House" and the film that's being called this year's surprise breakout potential contender - "Fruitvale".
