New Line is looking to make Ice Cube "Teacher of the Year." The studio has bought the comedy pitch from scribe Jeff Bushell with an eye for Cube to star in the tale of two junior high school instructors in a brutal competition to take teacher of the year honors. "Actor Ian Holm is to play Pope John Paul II in a TV biopic, it was announced today. Holm, who played Bilbo Baggins in the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, will star in a four-hour mini-series for US channel CBS. Pope John Paul II died in April aged 84. Holm, 73, will portray him from the time he was elected to the papacy in 1978 until his death, taking in the assassination attempt in 1981 and his diagnosis with Parkinson's Disease. A younger actor will play his earlier years, from his time as a student in Poland. Tentatively titled Pope John Paul II, the script for the biopic has been supervised by historians from the Vatican..." (full details)

"Cry, the Beloved Country" helmer Darrell James Roodt will direct indie pic "Prey," starring Bridget Moynahan. Beau Bauman and Jeff Wadlow ("Cry Wolf") co-wrote the screenplay with Roodt. Story follows an American family in Africa on holiday that becomes lost in a labyrinthine game reserve and is stalked by savage lions. Singh described "Prey" as "a suspense-filled film that can be likened to 'Jaws' in the African bush." Pic is set to shoot in South Africa in August..." (full details)
