"Syriana" filmmaker Stephen Gaghan has set up two new directing projects dealing with two distinct issues - Mexican cocaine smuggling and Chinese human trafficking reports Deadline.

The first, which is being referred to as an untitled Cartel Project, is setup at Warner Bros. Pictures and is partly based on Richard Marosi’s four-part LA Times article series.

Said articles explored an extensive DEA wiretap operation which cracked a variety of smuggling rings transporting tons of cocaine from Sinaloa, Mexico into Los Angeles.

The second project is at Flashlight Pictures and will be based on Patrick Keefe's book "The Snakehead: An Epic Tale of the Chinatown Underworld and the American Dream".
