King Kong (script) "Jackson and Walsh have already created an eye-popping action movie but, with all the resources they'll have (including a rumored $110 million budget) and a few Oscars on the shelf, don't you think they'll want to do more? We all know they can. All they need to do is focus their film on the four characters (the three humans and Kong). Avoid the spectacle and strengthen the character..." (full review)
Starsky & Hutch "To be sure, all the buddy cop cliché's are on parade in Starsky & Hutch. What else would you expect? But the twinkle in Starsky's eye and sharp direction from talented helmer Todd Phillips gives them a kind of newness I haven't seen in other TV to movie spoofations. The result is a surprisingly good time and perhaps even a wakeup call for the once great Ben Stiller, world's most ape-like comedian..." (full review)
"You can't hate a film like Starsky and Hutch where it obviously had it's heart in the right place (so much so it includes a rather weak cameo by the original stars Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul) but you can be disappointed in the final result. I mean really...the Torino...and no over the top Blues Brothers style car chase!?! They didn't ignore the car altogether with a few tossed in montage style shots and a weak golf course chase but these never really show off the car in any meaningful way. That is a disappointment..." The Girl Next Door "Movies like "The Girl Next Door" come around once in a blue moon. It is the kind of beautiful gem that seems to appear out of nowhere and blindside you with just how exceptional its every aspect is. And in director Luke Greenfield is a filmmaker who confirms that there is talent of the highest order out there who is capable of much more than just a silly Rob Schneider comedy. He zeroes in on the pulse of today's and yesterday's teenager, and does it with no signs of pretension, smugness, or jokiness..." (full review)
"The most surprising thing I found was a film that made me care about its characters, even though the outcome is predictable from the trailer alone. It is rare these days to see a good teen comedy hit theatres (the last one I really enjoyed being Orange County) and even rarer when it combines some of the gross out humor new audiences have come to expect and still keep its heart in tact..." Twisted "Overall, the subject matter was compelling in the written synopsis and in theory, but it was terribly diluted and pale in execution. The moments meant to shock and confuse and throw the audience off course, just made them chuckle. If you want to get deep and dirty with psychological profiles (and I've compiled a ton for Ashley Judd's character from the first five minutes), then you'll be disappointed, but if you want someone to hold your hand and slap you in the face after an hour-and-a-half, then plunk down your moolah and park your brain at the door..." The Passion of the Christ "Without an emotional hook or narrative spine, "Passion" quickly corrodes into an empty experiment in shock cinema. Putting an artistic expression of this shape and explicitness is brave of Mel Gibson, and "The Passion of the Christ" is a profoundly felt and memorable film. But who'll feel the spirituality and the depth of the story outside of the already converted and Mr. Gibson himself is a mystery to me..." (full review)
"I think you'll get out of this movie what you go in looking for. If you're a Christian looking for inspiration, you'll find it. If you're someone looking for anti-Semitic themes, you're probably going to find it whether it's there or not. If you only care about the acting, I think you'll come away impressed with the performances. But whether you enjoy the film or not, it is undeniably something that will generate good discussion and that makes it worth checking out..." (full review)
"For those of us who already know the story of the Passion play, did we really need Gibson's unsettling vision to make us feel spiritually whole again? I truly hope that it inspires people to get back in touch with their faith and to become more involved with their religion. That would be, I suppose, the ultimate achievement for The Passion. I can only speak for myself, but I just had a hard time wiping away the haze of all the blood to make out what the film was saying to me personally..." (full review)
"The bottom line is that The Passion of the Christ is an astonishing cinematic achievement, utterly riveting from start to finish. Intense and dramatic, the film's only real drawback is the hardcore violence - which will undoubtedly turn off a large number of viewers. Still, you'd be hard pressed to find a more engaging and deeply moving film than this one; it's the kind of movie one wishes for when sitting through the seemingly neverending barrage of cliched, inept Hollywood product. Gibson's created a classic that will be debated for years to come, and though there are no easy answers, the film's place among the most revered historical epics is undeniable..." (full review)
"Although the film may have flaws in its historical accuracy the fact that it was made should be celebrated. There are many films on the life of Christ in existence and one only hopes that the commercialization of this film doesn't give the novice moviegoer the impression that this is the definitive movie version. It's not. Whether or not it is embraced by audiences doesn't matter but the film's true goal should be to stir things up and above all get people to think. The bottom line, no matter how you analyze it, it's just a movie..." (full review)
Starship Troopers 2 "he direct to video - or DVD as it may be these days - market is a hugely popular market these days. And for the most part, the follow-up's the studios are dishing out are remarkably good - some even better than their big-screen predecessors. "Troopers 2" isn't Verhoeven's original, but it's still a pleasing second coming for the bug squashers. So good in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the medium plays host to a second sequel or three..." (full review)
Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital (TV) "This is the best King has ever written for TV!. King has really done what he was supposed to do. He has taken a really good series and turned it into his version of it..." (full review)
