Roland Emmerich has tapped young German director Marco Kreuzpaintner ("Summer Storm") to helm "Girls Next Door" for his new Munich-based shingle Reelmachine. "Girls Next Door is based on a script by Oscar-nominated scribe Jose Rivera ("The Motorcycle Diaries"). The pic, based on a New York Times Magazine story about the worldwide trafficking in sex slaves, is set to start shooting in May in Los Angeles.
The story follows two different girls from very different backgrounds who are both sold into prostitution and the sex slave industry. One is a Romanian girl forced into sex slavery after being promised a better life in America. The brother of the other girl (a Mexican girl abducted and forced into the trade) joins forces with a cop and discovers he is the father of a young daughter who is also likely a sex slave.
