Runelords In Development

By Garth Franklin Monday February 23rd 2004 02:50PM

Franchise Pictures has apparently picked up this adaptation of the four-book series which Warner Bros. will distribute domestically. The $80 million first movie in a potential trilogy will start filming this early Summer in and around Prague and the Czech Republic.

"The Runelords" by David Farland is a sci-fi/fantasy novel series about a society with an economy based on 'endowments' - characteristics like strength, stamina, wit, grace, etc. are a currency which are exchanged, bought and sold - a Runelord is someone who has hundreds of such endowments. The catch is those whom he's taken said qualities off, now fall under the lord's care.

Casting on the ensemble project has begun and all the names are tipped to be announced by late March, more immediate though is that a director is almost certain to be announced later this week.

The New York Toy Fair was apparently the site of some marketing meetings with potential licensees. The runelords.com website and the runelordsthemovie.com are thought to be merging to make one interactive site apparently.
