Langella Goes White Over Superman

By Garth Franklin Tuesday April 5th 2005 02:15AM

Frank Langella has stepped into the role of Perry White in Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns" for Warner Bros. Pictures says The Hollywood Reporter.

Hugh Laurie originally was cast in the role but bowed out because of a scheduling conflict with his TV series, "House." Laurie had not yet shot any scenes on the movie, which began production March 21st in Australia. In the Superman canon, White is the editor of the Daily Planet, the newspaper where Superman's alter ego, Clark Kent, works as a journalist.

In Singer's version, White has a son named Richard, played by James Marsden, who is Lois Lane's love interest. Langella is best known for playing various villains over the past few decades including starring roles in films such as "Dave", "1492: Conquest of Paradise", "The Mark of Zorro", "Dracula", "Masters of the Universe", Body of Evidence", "Cutthroat Island", "Lolita", "Small Soldiers", "The Ninth Gate", "Sweet November" and the upcoming flicks "House of D" and "Goodnight, and Good Luck".
