By Garth Franklin Wednesday March 23rd 2005 09:26PM

Released in 2003, "The Jesus Thief" is a sci-fi thriller novel about an attempt to clone Jesus Christ. At its center is wealthy New York microbiologist Dr. Felix Rossi who burns with unspoken questions as he leads a scientific investigation of the Shroud of Turin. Do the linen threads contain the blood of Christ? Is the DNA still intact?

Today, author J. R. Lankford revealed in a mass e-mail: "Last year, 'Thief' was optioned for film and recently there's been progress. The actress who optioned it asked me to come out to Hollywood and meet with her and the likely production company. Can't name names yet, but it involves someone who won an Oscar this year. They wanted to talk to me about trying my hand at the screenplay. The meeting was wonderful".

The author has also drafted a sequel which takes the characters to Italy, and completed a first draft of the final book in the trilogy that takes place in Mexico and New York.
