Paramount Pictures has acquired "The Serpent and the Eagle," an epic project that Ron Howard will direct about the Spanish conquest of Mexico in 1520 reports today's Variety.
Brian Helgeland ("Man on Fire", "Mystic River") will write a new draft of the script for the project which Brian Grazer will produce. There is no clear timeframe for Howard to direct the film, though many think it'll take place once he finishes work on "The Da Vinci Code" adaptation which is about to head into production.
"Serpent" originated at Universal when Howard dropped out of "The Alamo". Imagine acquired a script by Hans Beimler and Robert Wolfe that focused on how the Spanish conqueror Hernando Cortez plundered the Aztec nation aided by an Aztec princess-turned-slave.
