Every other day there's a rumour about who will take over the role of James Bond once Pierce Brosnan walks, but the past few days has seen one rumour emerge that has gripped a lot in the media according to MI6.
Monday's Daily Mail posted a piece indicating that Brosnan has been axed from the series and the producers are searching for a "younger" actor to "re-energise the franchise and take it to even greater heights". Rewrites of the piece have been appearing all over the world in such newspapers as The Herald Sun, The Chicago Sun-Times, The Times of India, and Ireland Online - several of which are already pegging Hugh Jackman as the next to play 007.
Whilst MGM or Eon have yet to comment on the issue, what makes the report sceptical are two reasons - one, Brosnan's run has easily been the franchise's most profitable with each of his movies outgrossing the previous one. The other and most solid reason why its not happening is a recent quote from Brosnan himself who says "I think we're good for a fifth. Barbara and Michael [producers] say they're happy to have me on board until I say no. But one has to be realistic about this. As for a sixth,it's a possibility".
On the other side of the argument though, 007 site CommanderBond.Net has confirmed with its own sources close to the negotiations for Bond 21 that Pierce Brosnan will not be returning and negotiations with him for the the role contract have ceased. They also say the reasoning why the rumour hasn't been squashed til now is that Eon is waiting til they select a successor before announcing Pierce's retirement.
Expect the madness to end soon one way or another.
