It has been almost a year since it last aired, but now British sci-fi series "Torchwood" looks officially set to return.
The Starz Network ("Spartacus: Blood and Sand") and BBC Worldwide will produce and premiere the ten-episode new season of the "Doctor Who" spin-off which will be rejigged to include locations in the US and around the world according to a press release from both parties.
John Barrowman and Eve Myles will return in their roles as Captain Jack and Gwen respectively, along with some new faces. Show creator and executive producer Russell T. Davies will return as showrunner, as will his regular cohort Julie Gardner.
Davies is expected to lead a team of writers on the series which looks likely to begin production later this year. The new season will premiere in the U.S. on Starz and the U.K. on BBC One next Summer.
Neither Starz or BBC Worldwide specify what format this new season will take. The first season consisted of 13 stand-alone episodes, the second also ran for 13 episodes and mixed a season long thread with stand-alones. The third was the single-story, five-part 'Children of Earth' mini-series event that aired over one week last July to a daily audience of over six million per episode in the UK.
Quotes within the press release indicate this ten-episode fourth season will definitely be utilising a season-long story thread of some sort. Whether there will be stand-alone stories added into the mix remains unclear.
With this deal announcement comes the quashing of two major concerns about the show's potential revival - the expense and the show's more adult edge. As a premium cable network, Starz likely gives the production team more financial resources and less creative restrictions than they've ever had before.
It will also allow them to push the boundaries of the adult themes and sexuality that are essential parts of the show. Seeing as "Spartacus" shows male frontal nudity every other week, the new "Torchwood" could hopefully offer up some similar sights (RTD if you're listening hire Russell Tovey right now).
