Ridley Scott Examines Andromeda

Master British filmmaker Ridley Scott, one of the executive producers of the upcoming "The Andromeda Strain" mini-series, revealed to Sci-Fi Wire that he's hoping to properly update the classic Michael Crichton novel and Robert Wise's 1971 first movie adaptation. "It becomes progressively more difficult to do things such as science fiction and still make them original, so there's a great deal of thought going into 'How the hell do we make it look original?'" Ridley and his brother Tony Scott are producing the four-hour epic (no start date is yet set), with Pulitzer-Prize winner Robert Schenkkan ("The Quiet American") adapting Crichton's novel onto screen. About the first film, Scott says "I enjoyed the film originally. I think [visual effects supervisor] Doug Trumbull was involved in that. So you come back from that saying, 'How do I update it?' ... It was really quite intriguing. It was really rather well done/ It must be now 30, 35 years ago. ... Very few films don't look dated after 35 years. So it's 'How do we take that?' And it's even more relevant today, I think, the scientific capabilities". Scott also confirmed he's eager to do more science fiction, but he won't be revisiting one franchise he helped create: The "Alien" movies - "No, I think they've wrung it dry". Thanks to 'Patrick'.
