The Tripods Are Coming

If you were an English or Aussie kid in the 80's, you'll remember "The Tripods". The "War of the Worlds"-esque style BBC series first aired in 1984 and was an adaptation of John Christopher's trilogy of books which were first published back in 1967.

Now, Empire Online reports that Australian-born director Gregor Jordan ("Ned Kelly", "Buffalo Soldiers") has signed on to rewrite and direct the adaptation of the books for Disney's Touchstone Pictures. The rights were picked up in the late 90's and already two writers (Darren Lemke & Terry Hayes) have had a go at the property. Now Jordan will pen a rewrite and direct.

The books are set in the 21st century and follow three young teenage friends who race to overthrow the alien Tripods before they get a mind-control device implanted in their heads (when people turn 15 they're automatically given one). "The White Mountains," "The City of Gold and Lead" and "The Pool of Fire" are the three books in the series.
