Comic-Con: The Incredibles

After the Warners panel on Friday, Disney launched their own presentation which included a few really good treats, most notably three pieces of footage.

The first was a special "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" teaser trailer created solely for the con which starts with Louie Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" and pulls back from a shot of the Earth. As it comes to the title name in the chorus, the planet explodes before the hurtling debris suddenly pauses with the sign "Don't Panic". The tagline 'The Greatest Adventure in the Universe Begins...When the World Ends" pops up, then the logo whilst stars spell out '42' in the corner. The whole thing got a rousing reception

Disney's big promotion here though was the Pixar CG animated flick "The Incredibles". Two clips and comments from the consistently funny Brad Bird turned this into arguably the most enjoyable panel of the day. Bird confirmed the film skews to an older audience and as of that day, the film was complete - short of some minor sound tweaking.

The clips were great. The first had an unfit Mr. Incredible getting into his old superhero suit (his stomach proves an obstacle) and is ejected out onto a volcanic island where he must defuse a security robot. The fight moves underground into the lava caves and combines both comedy and serious action. It's cute and yet fun. Better though was his visit to the house of an 'M' meets Linda Hunt style woman with an odd accent (see the trailer) whom he asks for a new suit design from. She's a real character in this, and has a great montage about how superheroes who have had capes have all come to rather unique ends.

The panel was short and sharp, nothing heavily gleaned here aside from Bird talking about how long it took to develop and the differences of working in the 2D and 3D animated worlds. Nevertheless the film looks to be up to usual Pixar standards of excellence and much better than the good (but somewhat odd) trailer lets on.
