Gavin Hood ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine," "Tsotsi") is in talks to direct an adaptation of Gay and Laney Salisbury's book "The Cruelest Miles" for Walden Media says The Hollywood Reporter.

Set in Alaska in 1952, the story follows twenty dog teams who're the only ones who could transport a life-saving serum across a thousand miles of Alaskan wilderness to the town of Nome where a deadly diphtheria epidemic was underway. The journey, through -60 Degrees Farenheit and phenomenon like ice fog, inspired the annual Iditarod dogsled race.

Sean O'Keefe and Will Staples are penning the script with filming to kick off in the Summer. Mark Johnson will produce.
