It was one of the more lightly enjoyable offbeat series on cable. Sure it isn't as polished as the assorted HBO and FX dramas, but Showtime's "Dead Like Me" offered a show mixing sufficient teen angst with off-kilter comedy about death. Well now, its been killed.
For those unfamiliar, "Dead Like Me" followed a girl named George (Ellen Muth) who, after being killed by a toilet seat that fell from the Russian space station, winds up becoming a 'Reaper' who must collect people's souls moments before their death. Helping her out is a short tempered boss and co-workers ranging from an all-too-rule following meter maid, a slutty blonde actress and a ever scheming English guy.
According to CNN, the afterlife drama which premiered last year on the premium cable channel, opened to relatively strong ratings and some critical acclaim. But the second season this year failed to sustain the buzz and thus sources indicate it has been cancelled. No word yet as to if the cancellation will affect the proposed DVD release of the second season in the first half of next year.
The end of "Dead" means chances are good for a number of new pilots that management is considering for series treatment. Among the contenders are terrorist drama "The Cell" and the cop drama "Hate."
