Maybe its the more sexually liberal cultures, maybe its the greater desire for fashionable togas, hell maybe it's that half a second flash of an Irishman's balls. Whatever the case it seems that "Alexander", like "Troy" or "Master & Commander" or "The Last Samurai" before it, is doing much better overseas than domestically.
The Colin Farrell epic opened in #1 film in 16 of the 17 international territories in which the film has opened in its first two weekends, scoring a cumulative box office gross of over $18 million overseas. Despite all the talk of lawsuits, the film has a strong debut in the top spot in Greece and a record-breaking debut in Russia.
The film also has yet top open in major territories like Germany, France, the UK, Spain, Italy and Japan.
