Pixar and Disney are shifting the release date of "Cars" from 2005 to June 9th 2006, causing both Disney's "Chicken Little" and Sony's "The Legend of Zorro" to move to the open November 4th slot "Cars" is leaving behind according to Variety.
The decision to move "Cars" was made by Disney in a bid to maximise the film's returns with both a long Summer theatrical bow followed by a profitable holiday DVD release. The deal also gives Pixar more time to pick another distribution partner if it follows the schedule.
Disney now has four extra months to work on "Chicken Little," likely to be the only CGI pic in theaters during the holidays next year. It does however leave the studio without an animated pic during Summer. Sony's decision to move its second "Zorro" pic to the same date marks an interesting move as well.
