Rival Capote Flicks Begin

Rival pics on the same subject seem to happen all the time - from CG critters & fish to the recent slew of attempted Alexander the Great projects. Now, two projects revolving around the friendship between author Truman Capote and murderer Perry Smith which yielded the writing of Capote's seminal crime chronicle "In Cold Blood," are vying for production status according to Variety.

In the red corner with the bigger cast is Warner Independent Pictures' "Every Word Is True" which is scheduled for a January 5th start date. Toby Jones is playing Capote and Mark Ruffalo has just been set to play Smith, whilst the likes of Jeremy Renner, Ashley Judd, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Cumming, Sandra Bullock and Gwyneth Paltrow are all attached. Doug McGrath is writing and directing.

In the blue corner is United Artists untitled feature based on Gerald Clarke book "Capote: A Biography" that stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as Capote and Clifton Collins Jr. as Smith, along with Chris Cooper, Catherine Keener and Bob Balaban. Bennett Miller is directing from Dan Futterman's script.

Both are competing though 'Word' is the first to set a shooting date. What that means for UA's project right now is unsure.

Thanks to 'I'm Not Al'.
