MTV recently visited the set of the comic adaptation and spoke with the various cast and crew involved about turning the adventures of Frank Castle into a big screen adventure:
Thomas Jane was asked why he took on the role - "I've been a fan of comic books all of my life, but I didn't take the Punisher role right away. Because any time you bring a known character to life, there's an incredible responsibility to not f--- it up....I just wanted to make sure we had the right take on it, that it was going to be rated R and we were able to do some of the graphic, violent, horrible stuff Frank Castle is famous for...My take on it is that Frank served his country in the Special Forces, and then he was a law man after that. His belief system is set up so he fully believes in wrong and right. And then, when the system fails him utterly, he snaps".
Rebecca Romjin-Stamos was happy she didn't have to wear blue makeup for this Marvel adaptation - "After playing Mystique, which took nine hours of makeup, I'm allowed not to wear any makeup at all, I can literally roll out of bed and onto the set". She does concede this film won't have the mainstream appeal of that other franchise though - "I don't know if you're going to be able to take the whole family to this. It's gonna be really dark, really bloody and pretty violent".
John Travolta is quite happy with Jane's work - "Thomas adds a layer of depth to his interpretation that actually dropped the gauntlet and raised the level of acting in the movie, He's bringing something Charles Bronson and Clint Eastwood brought to those early revenge movies, but it's even a step up, because he's a very committed and serious actor".
