Rob Bowman Talks Elektra

By Garth Franklin Thursday October 28th 2004 10:41PM

Rob Bowman, the director of ‘Elektra’ spoke candidly with Wizard Universe on his vision of the film, its ties to Greek mythology and the chances of bringing the property to TV:

So are you categorizing this movie as a sequel or spin-off? It sounds like you’re trying to make something totally new?

It is. It’s a stand-alone. And there’s just nothing about Jennifer in this movie that’s like “Daredevil” except that her name is Elektra

So just how is her character different than in the last film?

Well, I think there was less required of her character-wise in “Daredevil,” that movie was about Ben. But this movie is a complete investigation of her interior - and with all the cobwebs and demons and bad stuff thrown in. It really is a journey into her darkness, whereas “Daredevil” didn’t require that of her. So it’s very, very moody and dark, but I want to mitigate that by saying that what it’s about is how she reacts to a terrible situation

What’s the plot of “Elektra” in a few sentences? Well, I don’t want to give the plot away, but essentially Elektra learns some hard lessons about compassion, which is something I think we could all use a little bit more of. I thought taking the most cold-hearted assassin on the planet, and turning her into somebody who thinks caringly about other people would be interesting. And how do I do that? How do I make it believable? And the villains’ job is to make it as hard as possible on her. They don’t want her to succeed for one second. And then the fun of it with them was not just making them bad guys—they’re freaks! They do freaky things. It’s not a movie that’s just laden with spectacle. It’s a movie I hope is received as clever and inventive, and sort of freaky
