sp; Jake Gyllenhaal, Jamie Foxx and Lucas Black are all in various states of joining Universal Pictures' "Jarhead," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sam Mendes is directing and William Broyles has penned this adaptation of Anthony Swofford's Gulf War memoir, which is a coming of age tale about young marine Swofford and the members of his platoon caught up in the war.

Gyllenhaal is set to star as Swofford while Black is in final negotiations to play a team member. Foxx is expected to sign up soon as the squad commander.

Also cast as members of the platoon are Laz Alonso ("Eyes"), Brian Geraghty ("Art School Confidential"), Jacob Vargas ("Traffic") and Evan Jones ("8 Mile"). Universal has set a December start date in Mexico and California.

Mendes said the script is buoyed by "the blackest of black humor, anger, surreal surroundings and forbidden fruit of what these guys really talk about and what really goes on out there".
