The R-rated comedy "Tropic Thunder" opened to a solid but unspectacular $7 million opening day on Wednesday. That number will be seen as a disappointment considering last week's R-rated "Pineapple Express" took in $12.3 million on its opening day last Wednesday.
The good news is that the drop-off isn't expected to be a sharp due to much better word of mouth. "Tropic Thunder" is pulling in extremely good reviews with an 83% positive and 7.2/10 score on Rotten Tomatoes along with 72/100 & 7.0/10 review scores at Metacritic - making it the sixth best-reviewed wide release of the Summer behind "The Dark Knight," "Wall-E," "Iron Man," "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" and "Kung Fu Panda".
Paramount is citing estimates of around $40 million for the opening five-day run of the film and certain to nab the top spot from its main competition - "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" and "Mirrors". 'Clone' has garnered terrible reviews so far and general interest has apparently been cited only by the hardcore fans rather than the young audience Lucas apparently wants to attract.
