Phillip Noyce ("Clear and Present Danger," "Catch a Fire") is negotiating to direct the potential Tom Cruise drama "Edwin A. Salt" for Sony Pictures says Variety.

The Kurt Wimmer-scripted story casts Cruise as a CIA officer who's accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy. He must elude capture long enough to clear his name.

Both Noyce and Cruise have previously been linked to work together on the Warner Bros. drama "The 28th Amendment," this project apparently succeeded that. Both Terry George and Peter Berg previously opted out of 'Salt' altogether.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Sunil Perkash are producing and no start date has yet been set.
