Ball Funds the Towelhead

By Garth Franklin Thursday September 23rd 2004 06:59PM

Alan Ball, best known for penning the Oscar-winning script for "American Beauty" and creating/producing acclaimed HBO drama "Six Feet Under", has been busy in his spare time. Whilst SFU has been in production, Ball has also managed to begin work on two scripts which he hopes to direct himself.

The first is "Towelhead", based on the book that "mixes the sex drive of the underage with the repressed desires of adults". Set during the Gulf War, the book is a coming-of-age story of a 13-year-old Arab-American girl who must navigate a sexual obsession with a bigoted Army reservist under the oppressive eye of her Lebanese father. It doesn't get released to the public though til next April.

Ball paid out of his own pockets to pick up the fim rights and won't worry about financing til the script is done - "It will not be a terribly expensive movie to make, and I think stars will be attracted to the roles because they are not common".
