News Shorts: Memorial Day Weekend 2017

Lynne Ramsey Superhero Movie
While some arthouse film directors are famous for turning up their noses at comic book properties, filmmaker Lynne Ramsey (“We Need to Talk About Kevin”) has no such qualms and tells The Playlist: “I would love to do a superhero movie. I love comic books. I read them as a kid. They don’t ask me to do things like that.” Ramsey is coming off much acclaim for her Cannes entry “You Were Never Really Here” which premiered this weekend.

Fantastic Beasts 2
Author J.K. Rowling has confirmed that her script for the upcoming second film in the “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” franchise has been completed but won’t reveal anything about it. Production on the film is slated to begin this Summer.

Drone Warrior
Screenwriter Andy Bellin is set to adapt the military action movie “Drone Warrior” for Michael Bay’s Bay Films and Paramount Pictures. The biopic follows former U.S. Army intelligence analyst and drone warfare expert Brett Velicovich, an Iraq War vet who used his drone skills to fight terrorists. The project doesn’t currently have a director attached.

Salt to the Sea
Universal Pictures has scored the film rights to Ruta Sepetys’ book “Salt to the Sea” with Scott Neustadter & Michael Weber attached to pen the script and Lorenzo di Bonaventura set to produce.

The survival tale follows the struggle by three refugees from East Prussia at the end of WWII. They believe their way to safety is on the ship the Wilhelm Gustloff. On the verge of freedom, it went to hell as the sinking of that ship became the largest maritime disaster in history.

The Translator
“Mr. Turner” helmer Mike Leigh has announced that his next project is “Peterloo” for Amazon Studios and Film4. An ensemble of over 100 actors has been assembled for the film which deals with the infamous 1819 massacre at a peaceful pro-democracy rally at St. Peter’s Field in the UK – an incident in which many working class people were injured or killed.

The Fall
Shawn Levy is set to direct and produce the Amblin sci-fi action drama “The Fall” from a spec script by Pete Bridges. Levy will oversee a re-write with production aiming to begin shortly.

The story follows a newly divorced couple during an alien invasion making a dangerous trip from the city to their house in the suburbs where their children are stranded. Secrets and details of a marriage gone bad are unearthed along the way.

Red River
“Dracula Untold” helmer Gary Shore is set to direct the thriller “Red River” from BAFTA and Oscar-nominated scribe Ronan Blaney. The project is currently in pre-production and is set to shoot later this year in Northern Ireland.

The story is set in an isolated town in Ireland, where a bloodthirsty drifter befriends an immigrant family and avenges their murdered father.

Aquaman
Filming is continuing on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia on James Wan’s “Aquaman” movie with some new set photos popping up at Just Jared showing Amber Heard and Jason Momoa filming scenes together.

The scene is rumored to be a flashback sequence which takes place before the events of “Justice League”. Click on the link below to access the full gallery.

Dragon
Canadian director Brandon Cronenberg is teaming up with Marvel Comics writer Dan Abnett on the epic sci-fi thriller “Dragon” for Independent and Prospero Pictures. Cronenberg will co-write the project with Abnett.

Set in the near future, the film envisions a society radically changed as a result of discovering ancient organic lifeforms drifting through the cosmos whose alien biochemistry has been processed to create a hugely profitable opiate. The film follows a captain and her crew as they hunt these ‘dragons’ in deep space, seeking to secure a comfortable future.

Godzilla: King of Monsters
Randall P. Havens (“Stranger Things”) has joined the cast of Michael Dougherty’s “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” which begins production later this year. Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, O’Shea Jackson, Charles Dance, Sally Hawkins and Ken Watanabe co-star in the film which is currently targeting a March 20th 2019 release.

Overboard
Eva Longoria has joined the cast of the remake of Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell comedy classic “Overboard” at MGM. Rob Greenberg and Bob Fisher are helming, with filming to begin shortly in Vancouver.

Eugenio Derbez plays a spoiled playboy from one of Mexico’s wealthiest families who falls overboard off his yacht. He’s then convinced by a single, working-class mom (Anna Faris) that he’s her husband.

Husband’s Secret
Blake Lively is set to star in CBS Films’ thriller “The Husband’s Secret” based on the novel by Liane Moriarty (“Big Little Lies”). Chris Weitz, Paul Weitz, and Andrew Miano are producing.

The story follows a wife, mother, and chronic perfectionist who inadvertently discovers that her husband has been keeping a secret from her for years … a secret that leads her to realize that her life is built on a foundation of lies and murder.

Slender Man
Joey King and Julia Goldani-Telles are set to star alongside Annalise Basso and Jaz Sinclair in Sylvain White’s horror thriller “Slender Man” which will open May 2018.

Written by David Birke and Mike Scannell, the story follows a tall, thin horrifying figure with preternaturally long arms and a featureless face. He is thought to be responsible for the haunting, stalking, and disappearance of countless victims.

Transformers: The Last Knight
A new TV spot is out for Michael Bay’s “Transformers: The Last Knight”. There’s a definite emphasis on a more serious tone and deeper mythology with even the TV advertising for this, we’ll see how it carries over in the film’s release on June 23rd.

Adrift
Sam Claflin (“The Hunger Games”) is in negotiations to join Shailene Woodley in Baltasar Kormakur’s survival drama “Adrift” at STX Entertainment. Miles Teller was initially in talks but had to pass.

The story follows Tami Oldham, who, after being knocked unconscious by the largest hurricane in the history of the Pacific Ocean, awakens to find her fiancé Richard Sharp badly injured, their boat in ruins, and no means of communication or navigation. She must race against the clock to save herself and the only man she’s ever loved.

Before I Disappear
Ice Cube will star in the high-tech crime thriller “Before I Disappear” for Universal Pictures and Captivate Entertainment. Josh Zetumer penned the story of a clandestine high-tech version of the witness protection program, which makes clients disappear by offering them seamless exits into new lives.

Widows
Lukas Haas has joined Steve McQueen’s “Widows” remake from New Regency and 20th Century. Viola Davis, Robert Duvall, Liam Neeson and Colin Farrell also star in the film about the wives of four armed bank robbers who take over the final job of their husbands after they’ve been killed.

Truth or Dare
“Teen Wolf” star Tyler Posey will join Lucy Hale in Blumhouse’s upcoming horror thriller “Truth Or Dare” along with Violett Beane, Nolan Gerard Funk, Hayden Szeto, and Sophia Taylor Ali.

Jeff Wadlow helms the film about a college student in Mexico who is conned into playing a supernatural version of Truth or Dare. The game doesn’t stop and follows her and her friends back home. Filming begins next month.

Wicked
Stephen Schwartz has confirmed the forthcoming film adaptation of his Broadway mega-hit “Wicked”{ will feature ‘at least two’ new songs. He adds that Stephen Daldry is waiting on a draft of the screenplay.

The Translator
Ericson Core (“Invincible,” “Point Break” remake) is set to helm “The Translator,” a new film adaptation of Zaghawa tribesman Daoud Hari’s novel which is an on-the-ground account of the mass genocide going on in the Western Sudan. Christine and Mark Holder will produce.

Tag
Annabelle Wallis (“Annabelle,” “The Mummy”) has been set to star in Jeff Tomsic’s comedy “Tag” alongside Jeremy Renner, Ed Helms, Jake Johnson and Hannibal Buress.

The film is based on a true story featured in the Wall Street Journal about a group of friends who have been playing a no-holds-barred version of the children’s game for the last thirty years.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Actor John Boyega has posted a cute video of a new blaster gun prop which his character of Finn will be using in the upcoming “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” opening in December.
