News Bits: Virginia, Gaffigan, Chesil, Spider-Man

Sweet Virginia
Jon Bernthal (“Daredevil”) and Christopher Abbott (“A Most Violent Year”) will join Imogen Poots, Rosemarie Dewitt, and Odessa Young in the Jamie Dagg-directed indie thriller “Sweet Virginia.” Filming begins this weekend.

Ben and Paul China’s Blacklist script has Bernthal as a former rodeo star who unknowingly starts a rapport with a young man (Abbott) who is responsible for all of the violence that has suddenly gripped his small town. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Chris Ferguson, Fernando Loureiro and Roberto Vasconcellos will produce. [Source: Variety]

The Jim Gaffigan Show
TV Land has announced that “The Jim Gaffigan” Show will end with its second season. Star, creator and producer Gaffigan made the announcement Monday explaining the decision to turn this Sunday’s season finale as a series-ender. [Source: The Live Feed]

On Chesil Beach
British newcomer Billy Howle (“The Sense Of An Ending,” “The Seagull”) has been cast as the male lead of Edward Mayhew opposite Saoirse Ronan in the film adaptation of “Atonement” author Ian McEwan’s 2007 novel “On Chesil Beach” at Number 9 Films, BBC Films and Lionsgate.

Set in England in 1962, the touching tale follows two young lovers Edward and Florence (Ronan) and how their unexpressed misunderstandings and fears shape the rest of their lives. Dominic Cooke (“The Hollow Crown”) is set to direct the project with filming kicking off in October. [Source: Deadline]

Spider-Man: Homecoming
Jona Xiao (“Halt and Catch Fire”) has joined the cast of Sony and Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming” opposite Tom Holland, Marisa Tomei and Michael Keaton.

Plot details are still under wraps as is Xiao’s character. Holland is playing Peter Parker and Tomei will portray Aunt May while Keaton is on board for the role of a villain. The film opens July 7th next year. [Source: Variety]
