News Bits: Transcendence, Gravity, Ultron, Shaw

Warners has released a new still of Johnny Depp starring in Wally Pfister’s sci-fi tale “Transcendence”. The film is currently targeting a 2D and IMAX release on April 17th. [Source: Collider]

Both Alfonso Cuaron’s “Gravity” and Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave” are set to score re-releases on Friday, January 17th – the day after the Oscar nominations are announced.

The number of screens for both is yet to be determined, though in the case of “Gravity” it’s thought to be more than your typical limited re-release. The Sandra Bullock and George Clooney-led space epic has already grossed $670 million worldwide. [Source: The Wrap]

Avengers: Age of Ultron
J.P. van der Merwe has been added to the crew of the IMDb page of “Avengers: Age of Ultron”. van der Merwe is listed as the film’s “South African extras casting co-ordinator” indicating scenes from the project would be shot there. Marvel had reportedly previously explored the possibility of shooting in Cape Town. [Source: CBM]

Sir Run Run Shaw, the Hong Kong media mogul whose empire spanned movies and television across eight decades, has died at the age of 106.

Sir Run Run popularised Chinese kung-fu films in the West and helped turn Hong Kong into the ‘Hollywood of the East’. He also invested in numerous films including the likes of “Blade Runner,” and is listed as a producer on no less than 320 films. [Source: ABC]
