News Bits: Summer, Rampage, Body, Private, 38

Summer of Love
18-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes is set to make his film acting debut in Ivan Reitman’s road-trip musical “Summer of Love”. Reitman has never directed a musical before and enlisted the young Vine star turned music sensation for the project which Shawn Wines, Lorene Scafaria and Leonard Blum penned. [Source: THR]

Rampage
Jack Quaid (“The Hunger Games”) and Matt Gerald (“Marvel’s Daredevil”) have joined the cast of the film adaptation of the classic arcade game “Rampage” for New Line. Dwayne Johnson re-teams with “San Andreas” director Brad Peyton and producer Beau Flynn on the project.

The story will feature three creatures — a monstrously transformed gorilla, crocodile and wolf — who wreak havoc on North American cities and landmarks. Ryan Engle and Adam Sztykiel have been the main writers on the script. The film opens on April 20th next year. [Source: Variety]

The Body
Synchronicity Films has secured the rights to Hanif Kureishi’s novella “The Body” with plans to develop it into high-end international drama TV series. Claire Mundell will executive produce with Robert Murphy (“Vera”) adapting.

The 2002 novel follows a middle-aged, middle-class man who is offered the chance to trade his aging body for a younger, fitter form of his choice. The first season will track Adam’s odyssey from ordinary man to beautiful person and his ultimate decision to restore himself to his real body. [Source: Deadline

Private Life
Molly Shannon is set to co-star with Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn in Tamara Jenkins’ Netflix original movie “Private Life”. Shannon plays a friend of the couple at the center of the film which begins shooting next month.

Hahn and Giamatti play a couple the throes of infertility, trying to maintain their marriage as they descend deeper and deeper into the weird world of assisted reproduction and domestic adoption. [Source: Variety]

Thirty Eight
Terrence Howard, Paula Patton, and Mike Epps have hopped onboard the independent crime thriller “Thirty-Eight”. Michael Carney (“Same Kind of Different as Me”) will direct from a script he co-wrote with Tim Clemente and Alexander Foard and filming begins in Georgia in May.

Howard, Patton, and Epps are playing police officers in a tough part of East St. Louis with the focus on a rookie officer who sees a killing on the first night of the job. Howard will portray a detective whose daughter vanishes; Epps will play a veteran cop with a family connection to a gang leader; and Patton will portray the partner of Epps’ character.
