News Bits: Gotham, Rogue, Sherlock, Solace

Gotham
Executive producer Danny Cannon has tweeted a photo from the set of FOX’s Batman prequel series “Gotham,” the new photo giving us a first look at Paul Reubens in character as the father of The Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor). Reubens appears later in the show’s current second season and has some familiarity with the role, making a cameo in the same role over twenty years ago in 1992’s “Batman Returns”. [Source: Twitter]

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Lyra Erso is rumored to be the name of “The Theory of Everything” star Felicity Jones’ character in the upcoming “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”. Jones’ role is effectively the lead in this first of the anthology films following a group of people hired to steal the plans for the first Death Star.

Three others have also reportedly joined the cast – Bern Collaco as a stormtrooper, Angus Cook as a mechanic, and Nabilah Karim in a samurai-style role. They join the likes of Riz Ahmed, Mads Mikkelsen and Ben Mendelsohn in the project which opens in December. [Source: Making Star Wars]

Sherlock
This past weekend’s “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride” special scored a chart-topping $5.27 million on the Monday opening day of its theatrical release in China. The BBC special starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman was given a market-leading 37,600 screenings Monday. [Source: Variety]

Solace
The Anthony Hopkins and Colin Farrell-led indie serial killer thriller “Solace” will get a theatrical release in China from next week though Infotainment China. That’s five days after the release of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” this coming weekend and a day before “The Last Witch Hunter” next Friday. This is being considered a flat fee release so is not counted amongst the 34 title quota of revenue sharing releases in that market which is the second biggest on the planet and growing.
