News Bits: Blackhat, Gambler, Venice, Kidnap

New photos of Chris Hemsworth in both Michael Mann’s action thriller Blackhat and Ron Howard’s period ocean survival drama In the Heart of the Sea. There’s also Kristen Wiig in Nasty Baby, Justin Long in Kevin Smith’s Tusk, and Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl.

The Gambler
Paramount Pictures has announced a December 19th Oscar-qualifying limited opening ahead of a New Year’s Day wide release for the Mark Wahlberg-led, Rupert Wyatt-directed remake of the 1974 James Caan film “The Gambler”.

Wahlberg plays a college professor sees his gambling addiction spiral out of control. James Toback based the script on his own experiences while teaching in New York City. Jessica Lange, Michael K. Williams and Brie Larson also star. [Source: Variety]

2014 Venice
Roy Andersson’s metaphysical trilogy capper “A Pigeon Sat On A Branch Reflecting On Existence” has won the prestigious Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion award. Andrei Konchalovsky’s “The Postman’s White Nights” scored the Silver Lion, while Joshua Oppenheimer’s “The Look of Silence” took a Grand Jury Prize. Acting awards went to Adam Driver and Alba Rohrwacher for “Hungry Hearts”. [Source: Deadline]

Relativity Studios has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Halle Berry’s upcoming thriller “Kidnap” from Lotus Entertainment. Shooting begins later this Fall. Berry plays a mother who will stop at nothing to rescue her kidnapped son. Luis Prieto is attached to direct from Knate Gwaltney’s screenplay. [Source: Variety]
