New Scribes Join “Starship Troopers” Reboot

Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, the scribes behind 2009’s “Friday the 13th” and the upcoming “Baywatch” movie, have been brought on to pen the reboot of “Starship Troopers” at Sony Pictures.

Both the previous 1997 film adaptation and the upcoming remake are based on the sci-fi war novel by Robert A. Heinlein about the military life of a soldier named Johnny Rico, who moves up the ranks as mankind fights a war against alien bugs.

Paul Verhoeven helmed the previous film which had a decided tongue-in-cheek satirical take on the original story’s blatant militarism and fascism, sending up propaganda films in the process. Three direct-to-disc sequels followed.

The new one is seen as a potential franchise relauncher and is said to be going back to the original Heinlein novel for an all-new take. As a result, no-one from the previous films will return.

Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe are producing.
