Two very late May releases have popped up on industry tracking figures.
Both Mike Dougherty’s “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and Dexter Fletcher’s “Rocketman” are set to debut in North America on May 31st and figures indicate the monster sequel and the Elton John biopic are on track for a $50-55 million and solid $20-25 million opening weekend respectively.
2014’s “Godzilla” reboot opened to a monster $93.2 million in 2014, while the tie-in follow-up “Kong: Skull Island” dropped to $61 million and this looks like it’s going to fall a little further.
The Taron Egerton-led “Rocketman” similarly pales compared to last year’s musical biopic sensation “Bohemian Rhapsody” which leapt from the gate with a $50 million opening weekend and ultimately went on to gross $216 million domestically and $902 million globally.
Both are expected to see their numbers rise after a final marketing push is made by their respective studios in coming weeks.
