With only a few months left to go before release, details about the trio of key new heroic characters within “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” remains decidedly vague. We know the actors and their character names – John Boyega as Finn, Daisy Ridley as Rey and Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron – beyond there’s mostly speculation and rumor aside from a few key facts garnered from the trailers.
In the wake of ‘Force Friday’ though, a bunch of new toys, costumes and merchandise surrounding the film have included new details about at least two of these characters, along with some other new character names and descriptions for other faces that will appear in the film.
First up, John Boyega’s Finn. Here’s the official description that came with the official Halloween costume of the character:
“Sometimes, heroes come from the unlikeliest of places. The Galactic Empire has been dead for decades, but evil never really dies. With villains rising to take the Empire’s place, heroes must rise to oppose them.
After becoming stranded by himself in the deserts of Jakku, and meeting up with a girl named Rey, a Stormtrooper named Finn has joined the side of the Resistance. He began his adventure as a part of the New Order, but now he’s one of the few people that can stop them.
With a new look, Finn is ready for a new mission. Since trading in his Stormtrooper armor for a new set of gear, Finn’s outfit might not be flashy, but it’s all that a hero needs to succeed.”
The bio for Daisy Ridley’s Rey is more interesting and seems to suggest she may be a Jedi:
“The mission to take down the First Order is underway! After invading the Starkiller Base, one member of the Resistance has split from her group and found herself in a massive room full of First Order soldiers.
Completely surrounded by Stormtroopers with blasters and Knights of Ren with lightsabers, she seems to be totally outnumbered. Unfortunately for her enemies, though, they’ve made a big mistake: it’s not about the strength of the weapon, but the strength of the warrior that wields it.”
Further details are also out about the Starkiller Base under the control of General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson) and is said to be more powerful than both Death Stars combined: “An ice planet converted into a stronghold of the First Order and armed with a fiercely destructive new weapon capable of destroying entire star systems.”
New characters in the film also include Resistance star fighter mechanic Goss Toowers and his co-worker B-U4D, Resistance tactical co-ordinator PZ-4CO, intergalactic criminal kingpin Tasu Leech, the scavenger and trader Sarco Plank, the skilled if reckless Resistance pilot Ello Asty,
More details about Chuck Wendig’s first novel in the “Star Wars: Aftermath” trilogy are also out, the series said to bridge the gap of events between the end of “Return of the Jedi” and the beginning of “The Force Awakens”.
The book features two key elements. One is a meeting of surviving Imperial officials trying to decide the fate of the Empire and one of them suggesting they go in search of the origins of the Dark Side of the Force. The other is a group that calls itself the Acolytes of the Beyond who purchase what is said to be a lightsaber once owned by Darth Vader. The plan is to destroy it so “that it can be returned to its master in death.”
