Telltale Games, “The Walking Dead” and “The Wolf Among Us” episodic game creators, have revealed new details about their upcoming game series set in the Batman universe.
Making the announcement yesterday at SXSW in Austin, the team confirmed that the series premieres this Summer and explores “what the consequences are of the player’s actions when decisions made as Bruce have a critical impact on his nightly crusade as Batman, and vice versa”.
Key scenes will allow the player to approach a scene as either Bruce or Batman, the results of that will have consequences for both sides of the character and those others around him – decisions affecting those who have a deeply personal relationship with Bruce in his private life and pushing them down different paths.
Same goes for Gotham City itself, players actions determining whom you deal with during the day and the criminals you take on at night. Regarding the villains, Telltale is keeping them under wraps until closer to the premiere.
The project is described as a “fresh interpretation” of the Batman universe. It has no link to any previously existing iteration of the property in games, film, TV or books. Key characters like Alfred Pennyworth, Vicki Vale, James Gordon, and Renee Montoya will be involved, but don’t expect an ‘extended Bat-family’ of characters – so no Robin, Nightwing or Batgirl.
Design wise it’s said to be a “non-photorealistic interpretation of the universe” with a “seamless living comic book art direction” inspired by the works of great artists from the comic like Jim Lee, Greg Capullo, and Neal Adams. It will have a mature rating with a feel akin to an R-rated film.
