Filmmaker Scott Frank talked with CHUD today about the Fox’s “Planet of the Apes” prequel and in the process cleared up much of the online confusion about the project.
Frank stresses that the project, currently titled “Caesar” and which he is rewriting, is NOT a remake of “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes”. The film “will not feature talking monkeys, and it will not end with chimpanzees running wild in the streets, taking over the world.”
Yet it’s a film not entirely divorced from the world of “Planet of the Apes” and the hard science fiction thriller is being setup as the ‘opening chapter in a saga’ about events between now and an ape-ruled world.
Frank says that the science that creates a hyper-intelligent chimpanzee is based on current real world research taken a step too far, and the plan is for the audience to come to really feel for this ape even as he takes actions that are hard to agree with towards the film’s end.
Frank is also doing a lot of research into the state of effects today in the effort to create a photoreal chimpanzee. It’s still early days however and Frank himself says he doesn’t know if the film would be going ahead until at least February.
