Netflix’s original horror/thriller film “Bird Box,” starring Sandra Bullock and Trevante Rhodes, has been such a hit that it has inspired its own ridiculous meme – the ‘Bird Box challenge’ in which people have been posting videos of themselves online trying to complete various tasks while blindfolded.
Someone will inevitably walk into traffic or fall into a ditch and so this example of online idiocy at its height is worrying enough that the streaming giant, which has nothing to do with the fan-generated meme, has issued the following warning on social media:
“Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.”
The film follows survivors in a post-apocalyptic landscape who can only survive by wearing blindfolds when travelling outside as seeing creatures wandering this world results in a horrific death. Netflix has touted viewership by over 45 million users in its first week of launch.
