Netflix has acquired the Nic Mathieu-directed action sci-fi feature “Spectral” from Legendary Pictures after the project was pulled from its initial August release this summer.
James Badge Dale, Max Martini, Emily Mortimer and Bruce Greenwood lead the film follows a DARPA scientist and a Special Ops team sent into a war-torn city where mysterious phantom aggressors code-named Spectral have been causing civilians deaths.
The story is said to be akin to “Black Hawk Down” but with spooks instead of enemy militia, and was shot with as many practical effects as possible in Budapest. There’s some top tier talent too behind-the-scenes starting with George Nolfi (“The Bourne Ultimatum”) penned the script from a story by Ian Fried and Mathieu.
Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Jillian Share produced, Junkie XL (“Mad Max: Fury Road”) did the score and WETA provided the weapons and digital effects. No word on when the film will hit the streaming service.
