Netflix has given a series order to the long-gestating period drama “The Get Down” which “Moulin Rouge” director Baz Luhrmann and “The Shield” creator Shawn Ryan will executive produce for Sony Pictures TV.
Set in New York City in the late 1970s, the story deals with a time in which the explosion of hip-hop, punk and other innovative music and art that coincided with a surge in crime, violence and urban decay. The series will focus on a group of crafty teenagers from the South Bronx.
Luhrmann has been developing the project for a decade and will be joined as executive producer by Catherine Martin, Paul Watters, Thomas Kelly, Stephen Adley Guirgis and Marney Hochman.
Thirteen episodes will be produced with a premiere slated for sometime in 2016. Luhrmann is expected to direct both the first two episodes and the final episode of the first season.
