Netflix is closing a deal for rights to author Jeff VanderMeer’s new work “Hummingbird Salamander” and plans for Sugar23 and Anonymous Content to produce the feature.
The story is described as a taut thriller set in the Pacific Northwest about a simple act of turning a key in the door of a storage unit, and changing someone’s life forever. Themes of bioterrorism, ecoterrorism, and climate change come into play.
Michael Sugar (“Spotlight”) and Ashley Zalta will produce. VanderMeer’s earlier novel “Annihilation” is being adapted into a feature with Natalie Portman and Oscar Isaac which will be released early next year.
