Netflix executives have reportedly expressed interest in acquiring Asghar Farhadi’s “Everybody Knows,” the opening night film at the Cannes Film Festival this year.
The Spanish-language drama stars Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz as a woman who returns to her native city of Madrid to uncover secrets from her past. The film is officially in competition at this year’s fest
The talk comes shortly after months of back-and-forth between Netflix and Cannes which saw the streaming giant choosing to sit out this year’s festival due to the draconian rules Cannes and the French government places on in-competition titles.
They have, however, had a team of acquisition executives on the ground in France ready to potentially acquire films with ‘Knows’ the first of several titles the company has expressed interest in acquiring. ‘Knows’ has distribution in France and will open in theaters there on May 9th.
