Streaming giants Netflix and Amazon are reportedly considering IMAX theatrical releases for their original features reports THR. The trade says talks are ongoing with the giant screen format provider about potential releases.
IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond, speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference earlier this week, says the company is “in active discussions with all of the streaming [services] about an IMAX release” and that this would help elevate these streaming releases into big events:
“The closest analogy I have is, if an airline said to you, you can sit in first class and drink champagne or you can sit in the back row. So where are people going to go? I noticed from informal discussions that a lot of them are going to IMAX.”
The comments come as IMAX announced an initiative last month to help bring the IMAX experience into people’s living rooms by combinations of premium home entertainment equipment.
