NBC Remaking “Prime Suspect”

“Without a Trace” creator Hank Steinberg and NBC are developing a U.S. version of ITV’s multi-award winning British procedural series “Prime Suspect” says AOL.

Created by Lynda La Plante, the first “Prime Suspect” four-hour mini-series in 1991 featured Helen Mirren in a star-making turn as no-nonsense Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison. As she investigated a series of serial murders, she must deal with sexist hostility from her male comrades.

Five more four-hour minis and three two-hour TV movies followed over the next fifteen years, each dealing with different issue ranging from homophobia and illegal immigrants to racism and war crimes.

The last and most recent one, 2006’s “The Final Act”, had Tennison on the verge of retirement and breaking down thanks to alcoholism and the death of her father.

The remake, which will be developed as a two-hour presentation, will be co-produced by ITV Studios and Universal Media Studios.
