NBC has ditched plans for a live broadcast version of the classic rock musical “Hair” which was originally set to air on May 19th.
That would have put it up against a number of other television events, most notably the series finale of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” which would’ve easily killed it. Sources indicate NBC is not completely abandoning live musicals, but they no longer plan on airing them as regularly as they have in the past.
The network started the recent revival trend of them with “The Sound of Music Live” bringing in 18.6 million viewers in 2013. In comparison, FOX’s recent “Rent” scored just 3.4 million viewers.
NBC’s recently planned live stage renditions of “A Few Good Men” and “Bye Bye Birdie,” with both of those now reportedly in limbo.
