Natalie Portman is nearing a deal to both star in and direct a currently untitled film about Esther and Pauline Friedman, identical twin sisters who were better known as the writers of the Ann Landers and Dear Abby syndicated advice columns.
Should the deal go through, Portman would play both sisters in the project which boasts a script by “The Affair” writer Katie Robbins, Peter Saraf and Dani Melia will produce.
Born in Iowa in 1918, the pair were very close growing up. When one accepted a position at the Chicago Sun-Times as an advice columnist, the other decided to start her own column and so began a bitter sibling rivalry. Their rift continued for decades, until the contentious relationship even trickled down to their two daughters.
The pair’s husbands and editors will serve as key supporting characters in the film, which does not have a start date as of yet. Portman is currently filming Noah Hawley’s “Pale Blue Dot” and will soon be seen in Xavier Dolan’s “The Death and Life of John F. Donovan” and Brady Corbet’s “Vox Lux”.
