Natalie Portman Falls For “Thor”

Natalie Portman has been cast as the female lead in “Thor” for Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures says the trades.

Portman will play Jane Foster, who in early comic book lore was a nurse who became Thor’s first love. The character will be updated to a more doctor-scientist occupation.

The epic fantasy adventure spans both present-day Earth and the mythical realm of Asgard. Thor is an arrogant Norse warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war.

Cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment, he learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Ear th.

Aussie hunk Chris Hemsworth is already cast as Thor, the Norse God of Thunder while Tom Hiddleston will play the villain Loki, the god of mischief.

Filming kicks off early next year for release May 2011. Kenneth Branagh is directing.
