Naomi Watts has signed on to star in Clint Eastwood’s Hoover biopic “J. Edgar” reports Variety.
Watts will play Helen Gandy, J. Edgar Hoover’s loyal secretary for 54 years. She was the ultimate keeper of his secrets, and a major behind-the-scenes influence in her own right on the inner workings of the FBI.
After the former director’s death, Gandy spent weeks destroying Hoover’s personal files of incriminating evidence which he used to manipulate and control major figures.
Watts takes over a role that Charlize Theron was once expected to play before she signed for “Snow White and the Huntsman”. Theron is also a likely candidate for Ridley Scott’s sci-fi epic “Prometheus”.
Watts joins a quickly growing cast which includes Leonardo DiCaprio as Hoover himself, Armie Hammer as his alleged lover Clyde Tolson, Josh Lucas as aviator Charles Lindbergh, Ken Howard as Attorney General Harlan F. Stone, Ed Westwick as the author of Hoover’s biography, and Damon Herriman as Bruno Hauptmann.
Eastwood, Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Rob Lorenz are producing.
