Nanjiani, Ruffalo Join “True American”

“The Big Sick” and “Silicon Valley” star Kumail Nanjiani is set to co-star with Mark Ruffalo in the Pablo Larraín-directed “The True American” according to The Tracking Board.

Based on the nonfiction book of the same name and set in the days following 9/11, the story follows a Muslim immigrant (Nanjiani) who survived a deadly hate crime, and is now advocating for mercy on behalf of his attacker (Ruffalo).

Larrain, who last helmed “Jackie” and “Neruda,” takes over from Kathryn Bigelow who was slated to direct the project which had Tom Hardy and Riz Ahmed starring. Bigelow remains onboard as a producer alongside Megan Ellison and Matthew Budman.
