Dermot Mulroney is developing, with the intent to direct, a biopic on Liberian soccer star-turned-politician George Weah says The Hollywood Reporter.
Weah rose from the Monrovian slums to become a multiple award-winning international soccer star and humanitarian. He used his popularity as a sports figure and influence in his home country to help bring down the bloody dictatorship of Charles Taylor.
He ran for president in 2005 and lost, a candidacy that cost him dearly (his home was burned and members of his family were raped). He’s now gearing up for another presidential run.
Mulroney and producers Tharita Cutulle and Rainier Negri spent much of a year securing Weah’s life rights. A scribe will shortly be sought to pen the script.
